Wine Chat TV Ep. 21: No. 1 Tip For Buying Wine

Written by pope on November 2nd, 2009

Buying wine can be a tough decision. That’s why Wine Chat TV is here. Can you take a guess on what we suggest as the best way to pick your wine? It’s not the type of grape. It’s not the region that the wine comes from. No, it’s who is producing it or even who is importing the wine. Join us as we touch on these topics and help you pick your next bottle of wine.

Wait a minute…was this episode filmed on the same day as Episode 20? I suspect so…
I seriously was writing "Oxford Companion to Wine" in my notebook, when I heard Chris say "Snorefest!" so I crossed it out and wrote "SNOREFEST" in all caps next to it. I really like this idea, and didn't even think that the brand name of the wine could be different than who actually makes it — duhhh. I will definitely try this the next time I am out buying wine (preferably not at the grocery store). I had been buying different wines of the same brand, but felt boring. Perhaps I can mix things up by buying the same producer or importer!

On another note, where are those T-shirts I was promised long ago???

Yes it was filmed on the same day. Same bad light, same bad hair. But it's hard to pin down Chris to film episodes these days. He's just too busy traveling the world teaching impoverished children to read.

I do still recommend the Oxford Companion, but only if you plan on investing the time to become a serious wine dork. It's kind of the difference between seeing a Star Wars movie and liking it vs. knowing the names of uncredited characters and owning the action figures. At the moment, I'm reading Clive Coates' newly revised "The Wines of Burgundy." No action figures yet, but the day may come.

I had completely forgotten about the T-shirts. But the holidays are right around the corner…

Terrific advice and well done as usual. No doubt, Kermit Lynch has a great reputation and a real knack for finding undiscovered gems in France.
I had a great experience recently with the Kermit Lynch Cotes Du Rhone red that you featured in this episode.

    Keep up the great work!

Loved the blog. Excellent information. I've saved this blog as a definite favorite. Looks like you only post 1-2 episode a month. Can't wait for the next.

Thanks for stopping by. Yes, we only post a couple of episodes a month right now. We started out more ambitious, but it just kind of ended up this way. I think it's more entertaining in small doses anyway. It's been my experience that people who listen to me babble on about wine every day are far less entertained by what I have to say.
